Significant Events In The World's History

Q1

During the final stages of the World War II in August 1945 there were two atomic bombings: Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The U.S dropped two bombs „Little Boy“ on 6. Aug to Hiroshima and "Fat Man" on 9. Aug to Nagasaki. About 200 000 people were killed in total.

The singer Sandra also made a song of this tragic incident.

On November 22. 1963 thirty-fifth President of United States J.F Kennedy was assassinated.

It took place in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was killed by a gunshot to the head.

9/11 refers to The September 11 suicidal attacks to the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in NY City. Four jet airliners were used in the attacks. Two of them crashed into World Trade Center, one crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington and the last one crashed into a field near Shanksville.

On the 14th April 1912 the worldfamous Olympic-class passenger liner Titanic sank.

Minutes before midnight Titanic struck an iceberg and sank 2 hours and 40 minutes later.

1,517 of the 2,223 passengers died. There were'nt enough lifeboats on board because it was belived to be unsinkable.

Arpanet was the first network of computers in 1969. In the late 70’s Arpanet wanted to devise an internet system, but it was difficult and unorganized. Tim Berners-Lee invented a method of organising information which he called the world-wide-web. It was easy to use and it allowed the transfer text, sound, images and video clips.

On the morning of December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Four battleships sunk, and four were damaged, two destroyers sunk,one destroyer was damaged. 188 aircraft destroyed and 155 aircraft damaged. 2,345 military were killed and 1,247 military were wounded. 57 civilians killed and 35 civilians wounded.

Adolph Schicklgruber, known as Adolf Hitler (20 April 1889 – 30 April 1945) was an Austrian-born German politician and the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, commonly known as the Nazi Party. He was the totalitarian leader of Germany from 1933 to 1945, serving as chancellor from 1933 to 1945 and as head of state (Führer und Reichskanzler) from 1934 to 1945.

Andrew Warhola, known as Andy Warhol, was an American painter, printmaker, and filmmaker who was a leading figure in pop art.
He was born in 6th August 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In third grade, he had chorea, a nervous system disease that causes involuntary movements of the extremities. Warhol became an outcast among his school-mates and bonded strongly with his mother. When he was confined to bed, he drew, listened to the radio and collected pictures of movie stars around his bed. Warhol later described this period as very important in the development of his personality, skill-set and preferences.
In the 1960s, Warhol was a very successful commercial illustrator. His illustrations consisted mainly of "blotted ink" drawings. He also took up painting, photography and sculpture. Then he started producing and directing films, such as Sleep, Empire, Dracula and Frankenstein. Warhol designed the cover to John Lennon's 1986 album Menlove Ave.

Norma Jeane Mortenson, known as Marilyn Monroe, was an American actress, singer and model.
After spending most of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a model career, which led to a film contract in 1946. Her best known films were How to Marry a Millionaire, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot. She won a Golden Globe Award for it. In 1999, Monroe was ranked as the sixth greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute.

Napoleon Bonaparte was a French emperor. He was born in 15th August 1769 in Corsica. Napoleon spent the early years of the Revolution in Corsica, fighting in a complex three-way struggle between royalists, revolutionaries, and Corsican nationalists. In July 1792 he was promoted into a captain in the French Army. After many wars, Napoleon became the Emperor of the French in 18th May 1804. After a lot of wrong decisions and wars Napoleon had to spend the last six years of his life under British supervision on the island of Saint Helena.

Diana Frances Spencer was the maiden name of the Princess of Wales. She was born on 1th July 1961 in Norfolk, England. Prince Charles had formerly been linked to Diana's older sister Sarah. In his early thirties, he was under increasing pressure to marry. Diana's aristocratic descent, Church of England faith, presumed virginity and native Englishness appeared to render her a suitable royal bride. Diana and Charles married at St Paul's Cathedral in July 29th 1981. Unfortunately she was killed in the car accident in France in August 31th 1997.

Geography

Q1


Vatican City is the smallest country in the world, with its area of 0.44 km². The pope lives there. The world’s largest country is, of course, Russia. Russia’s areas cover 17.098.242 km².

The Dead Sea is the world’s saltiest body of water (around 35% salts). In that part of the world, a rift is forming, and two crustal plates are spreading apart. Right along where the crust is being stretched thin, sits the Dead Sea. Because of the spreading, the surface sinks downward (around 13 inches per year). The Dead Sea lies between Israel and Jordan.

Puncak Jaya, or „Mount Victory“, rises over 5000 meters on the island, New Zealand. It’s also the highest mountain on an island. Europeans call it the Carstensz Pyramid, after a Dutch navigator sighted it.

The explorer Sir Walter Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower of London twice. The first time was in 1591, when he married a maid of Queen Elizabeth ’s. When the queen found out, she ordered to imprison him. Soon after getting out, Raleigh was accused in treason, because King James wished to make peace with the Spanish. Raleigh was released in 1612, when he promised to give a fortune to the king.

The Sahara, „The Greatest Desert“, is the world’s largest desert. It has an area of over 9.000.000 km². One of the oldest known inhabitants are the Berbers. They cover more than two thirds of its surface. By 6000 BC Egyptians were herding cattle and constructing large buildings there. Other inhabitants include: Nubians, Phoenicians, and Greeks. Nowadays Arabic is the most commonly spoken language in the Sahara.

America got its name from the grat explorer, Amerigo Vespucci. During 1505 and 1507 Vespucci made voyages to the America. A German mapmaker printed the first map, on which the New World was called America.

Francisco Pizarro conquered the Incas and Peru. In 1532 Pizarro landed at San Mateo Bay with his crew to explore the land. Soon he reached Cajamarca, and captured the Emperor of the Incas. In 1535 he founded Lima, Peru. Pizarro was assassinated in 1541.

Fashion

Q1


The longest-lasting and most successful fashion magazine, Vogue, is nowadays published in 17 countries. Vogue was founded in 1892, as a weekly publication. After Condé Nast took it over in 1909, it started spreading to other countries. The publications increased dramatically. In 1973 Vogue started to coming out monthly. The magazine also underwent stylish changes to target more audience. The current editon-in-chief of the American Vogue, Anna Wintour, has worked hard to protect the magazine’s reputation.

Mary Quant was born in England, in 1934. She is one of the many designers who took credit for inventing the miniskirt. She is famous for her pop art aswell. In 1955 she opened up a clothes shop with her husband. By 1966 she was working with 18 manufacturers. Quant wanted to be practical and allow women to run for a bus. Thats when the skirts became shorter. Quant named the skirt after her favourite car, the Mini. In addition to that, she is also credited for inventing coloured tights. Mary Quant popularised hot pants in the late 1960s.

Haute couture refers to the creation of custom-fitted clothing. Haute couture is made for a specific customer, and is usually extremely high quality and expensive.

In the mid-nineteenth century, Charles Frederick Worth produced works like that. The Englishman made his mark in the French fashion industry. He designed the clothes onto his customers himself. Chanel is considered as the most chic fashion designer in haute couture.

There are usually three to four buttons on a sleeve of a jacket. Often those buttons are just purely decorative and can’t be opened. Funcional cuff buttons may be found on high-end suits; the feature is called a surgeon’s cuff.

In eighteenth-century England, it was normal for women to wear wigs. Sometimes they reached four feet high. Wigs were decorated with everything from stuffed birds to model ships. Women wore wigs continiously for several months, which made mice and insects a hazard. Luckily, the craze died, when a hair-powder tax made it expensive.

Vintage clothing is a generic erm for garments originating from the previous era. Generally, all clothing made from 1920s to 1980 is considered vintage. Vintage clothes are mostly second-hand, but there’s a small percentage of pieces which haven’t been used.

A brassiere, commonly referred to as a bra, is an item of clothing, that covers and supports the breasts. It has replaced the corset, and is the most widely accepted method for supporting breasts. Bras are made both practical and attractive. Some feminists consider the brassiere of the repression of women’s bodies. Women have used a variety of garments to cover or elevate their breasts. Some female athletes had bikini-like garments in 1400s BC. Onwards from the 1500s undergarments were dominated by the corset. By 1900s, more bra-like garments emerged.


The negligee is a form of womenswear, for wearing in the bedroom and at night. The nightgown-like form was introduced in France in the 18th-century. It began to mimic women’s evening dresses by the 1920s. After World War II, nightwear changed to being primarily sensual and erotic. These days, negligees are much looser and made of semi-translucent fabrics.

A perfume is a mixture of essential oils, aroma compounds, fixatives and solvents to give the human body or objects a pleasant scent. The art of perfumery began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. Archeologists recently uncovered what are believed to be world’s oldest perfumes in Cyprus. They date back over 4000 years. An Arabian chemist, Al-Kindi, wrote a book about perfumes in the 9th century. The persian doctor, Avicenna, introduced the process of extracting oils from flowers by means of distillation.

The top model ranked 15 among Top Icon models is Carmen Kass from Estonia. She grew up in the city of Paide. She was discovered by an Italian modeling scout when she was fourteen. Soon she moved to Milan, later Paris, to pursue modeling. She has appeared on numerous magazine covers. Kass has also noted interest in business and she loves to play chess whenever she has time.

The first company to start manufacturing denim jeans is Levi’s. The company was founded in 1953, when Levi Strauss came to San Francisco to open his brothers dry goods business. Jacob Davis frequently purchased cloth from Levi Strauss & Co.’s. Davis did not have enogh money to purchase a patent for his products, so he suggested Strauss to start workking together. After they agreed, the men got the patent. Only denim overalls were produced in the 1870s. Modern jeans weren’t introduced until 1920s.
